Chapter 18

The scrape of Antoinette’s tongue against his cheek stirred Caleb from his sleep. It was like being slapped with a wet noodle. “Okay, okay, I’m up,” Caleb muttered, rolling over to look at her. “What idiot thought getting up at ass o’clock was a good idea?”

Antoinette trilled reproachfully.

“Right, right. I am that idiot. That idiot is me. How’s your leg?”

Antoinette held out the limb and chirped happily before spinning in a circle, showing how well it was functioning. She seemed perfectly fine, and Caleb felt a surge of relief. “You’re all healed?” he asked, sitting up in the bed.

Antoinette’s happy warbling was a clear confirmation, even if Caleb was focused too much on what she was saying to actually feel the response through their bond.

“Awesome. You hungry?”

Antoinette nodded firmly.

The moon overhead was bright and only half-full. Caleb squinted at it. It was so unlike the moon back home, and it wasn’t exactly half-full. There was a thick band of dim light between the light and dark halves. It was odd - he was used to moons being crescent, half, gone, or full. This partial strip of light was confusing until his brain kicked into gear. Of course. The smaller star. It’s displaced enough to provide a bit of light past the day-night terminator. There was so much about this place that was different. If he was going to be here for a long time, he’d have to get used to other things. Days would be longer or shorter depending on where the stars were in relationship to each other.

He shook his head to clear the last cobwebs of sleep from it. Cobwebs of sleep? Ms. Holtz would be proud, apparently some English class stuff stuck in my head. “Let’s go.”

In the half-light of the moon, the fields of fruit were cast in thick shadows. As Caleb had hoped, there weren’t any guards out and among the plants. They were concerned with what was inside the town, not what was outside. And you want to get into the town, Caleb thought, chiding himself. He rubbed his face one more time and motioned silently for Antoinette to come with him.

It didn’t even feel like stealing, although it technically was that. No effort had gone into keeping these fruits protected, aside from a simple fence around the edge. I wonder if that even keeps Kritt out? There’s tons that can fly over or walk under it, and plenty that could probably just smash it. He peered at it more closely. There were metal wires webbed back and forth between the beams of the fence, with tiny spikes woven into them. The gaps were too large to keep Antoinette out, but they were tight enough where it would be difficult for Caleb to…

Oh. Of course. The fences weren’t for Kritt. They were for humans.

Caleb really needed to find Karla to find out what her plan was to smash the Overseers to hell. This place was full of new horrors on top of new horrors, and so far none of them were about the Kritt.
